Morse Code
We saw that a telegraph is a pretty simple machine for sending electrical signals along a wire.
In order to send and receive information in something like a telegraph, you need to have a way to put the message in a code that can be sent over the wires.
Morse code translates letters and punctuation into a sequence of dots and dashes (long and short beeps).
People would send messages by telegraph by transmitting Morse code as a sequence of long and short beeps or buzzes, and the message could be transmitted over a long distance.
This website automatically translates Morse code messages for you:

Here's the Titanic's last message in Morse code:
.- -. .. -.-. ....- .---- .-.-.- ....- ....- -. ..... ----- .-.-.- ..--- ....- .--
Do you know what it says?
