Muraco Mentor Program

This is the blog we made for the Mentor Program with Mr. Ulicny.

We learned about how the Internet works and where our data is stored.

We learned about how data was transmitted in the earliest communication network, the telegraph, by building our own Morse code transmitters.

We also learned about how the Internet came to exist and how information is transmitted through the Internet in packets.

We set up our blog and learned how to contribute posts to it with words and pictures.

We learned how search engines crawl the Web. Google didn't index our Web until we put a link to it from another blog. After that, Google found it and indexed it within a few hours.

We also learned how to include audio files, video files, and embed games and other widgets.

We made a video and uploaded it to YouTube, then embedded the YouTube video on our blog.

My visit to NYC

I had a family vacation at New York City . We went to see the Statue of Liberty. We took many pictures of the Statue of Liberty. We also took tours of Manhattan and we saw the Empire State Building. Our hotel was in New Jersey so we took a bus ride to see whats going on in NYC. Then when we were in NYC we went to Times Square we saw huge TV screens and neon lights. It was very crowded there. I was amazed how tall the building are. If I look up it feels like I am going to fall down on the floor. We saw the Hudson River from our hotel. We could also see a little bit of NYC. We crossed the Brooklyn Bridge and learned about the 5 burrows that New York is made of. Those are Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island and we visited all of them.

We Are In Google!

When we started our blog last week, we checked to see if Google knew about our blog. We did a search on Google to see if we were in Google, and we were not. :(



But then, we added a link from our Mentor's blog to our blog, and Google indexed us. Now we are in Google! :)



Google came and indexed us for the first time on Feb 23, around 3pm, almost a week after we started the blog, but just a few hours after we added a link from somewhere else to the blog.

My Winter Vacation

I went to the Concord Museum on Sunday and I saw the artifacts of the history of Concord. I watched a video about these famous people who contributed in Concord's history. I also went to Louisa May Alcott's who is a famous writer of several books like "Little Women" house. This is a very old house from the 1800's and we saw how Louisa with her three other sisters used to live there with their parents. It was fun and interesting to learn about Concord's history.

The Winter Olympics

The US currently has 24 medals:
7 gold, 7 silver, and 10 bronze. Now that is something to be proud of !
On Sunday, the US hockey team beat the Canadians 5 to 3.
Germany is in 2nd, at a close 21, and Norway with 14.
The home team, Canada has only 9 medals, and even Canadian officials say the US has to many medals to beat!
However, they're still trying hard, the Canadian team is even replacing players!

The Valentines day party at school

It was finally time for our Valentines day party at school! The whole class was excited to have our secret cupid program. Each child brought a surprise present for each other. First, our teacher got out the presents and put them on the floor. They were seperated for the girls and the boys. Then the boys in the group picked up the presents from the pile. There was a poem attached to the each present. We read our poems out loud and had to guess who was the person it described. That part was quite fun. Once we were finished with the secret cupid program it was time to eat the Valentine treats that the parents brought over. Every body was very happy with the secret presents they received. While I was eating with my friends I got a stomach ache and had to lie down on the carpet. It was one fun day we had just before the starting of winter vacation.

Morse Code

We saw that a telegraph is a pretty simple machine for sending electrical signals along a wire.

In order to send and receive information in something like a telegraph, you need to have a way to put the message in a code that can be sent over the wires.

Morse code translates letters and punctuation into a sequence of dots and dashes (long and short beeps).

People would send messages by telegraph by transmitting Morse code as a sequence of long and short beeps or buzzes, and the message could be transmitted over a long distance.

HTML and HTTP

HTML: Stands for HyperText Markup Language

HTML is what browsers understand. HTML tells a browser how to display things on a screen.

Question: How do we get to a web page?

You type a website's name into the address bar at the top of your browser.

A website's name usually has www in it, which stands for World Wide Web.

Websites usually end in .com or .org or .gov

Those are called "domains". Every web address has a domain.

Another name for a website address is URL.

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.

URLs usually start with http://

HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol

HTTP is just the way that computers ask for information from each other and reply to each other.

HyperText is text that links to other text.

Every URL has a part that says what protocol it is using
